Nikki Shadwick is finding it impossible to get her life back
on an even keel after her rape. "Everywhere she goes and everyone
she sees reminds her of the rape," explains Suzanne Collins, who
plays her. "She can't trust anyone. Shw won't take a drink in case
it's spiked - she even sniffs the coffee her dad makes her to check
it's OK. She's a nervous wreck. Believe me, her partying days are
over." At least she can rely on her family for support. "Everyone is
trying to give Nikki what she needs," says Suzanne. "But her dad and
her brother are not coping well. They want to find the rapist and
kill him. Greg
can't bear the thought of anyone doing that to his little girl."
Suzanne, who went straight from being an 'A'-Level drama student to
the most famous close in Britain, is thrilled to have been given
such a strong story. "I was told I had a big storyline coming up
when I started, but they wouldn't tell me what it was," says the
20-year-old actress. "I was like, 'Oh my God, they're going to kill
me off! But I love it. It's horrible to say I enjoy playing a rape
victim, but it hasbeen great. The scripts have had me in
tears."
September, 1999
